1948 Tucker Torpedo

The brainchild of Preston Tucker, the “Torpedo” or Tucker Sedan, was created in response to the lack of new ideas from any of the big three in the early 1940′s. Originally designed with such innovations as four-wheel independent suspension,
a rear mounted flat six aluminum engine a hydraulic drive system and four-wheel disc brakes. Sadly only 51 cars were made and the Tucker Torpedo never got out of the starting gates, supposedly due to a conspiracy by the big three. On the bright side, a single iteration of this pioneering automobile is worth a sweet $1.2 million.

McLaren 12C Can-Am Edition Racing Concept: Pebble Beach 2012

The 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is about to get underway, and while we'll be bringing you the freshest photos and latest news as it happens, there's a bit of preliminary business to take care of: the previews. The latest is McLaren's 12C Can-Am Edition Racing Concept.

A track-only racing car built without the restraints of racing regulations, the 12C Can-Am is based on the 12C GT3 racer--but it goes well beyond what the FIA allows in that division. Both are based on the same carbon fiber monocell chassis as the production MP4-12C.

Most obvious are the aerodynamic departures, which include a carbon fiber front splitter, carbon fiber dive planes, and a massive carbon fiber wing, plus a carbon fiber diffuser, all tied into aggressive widebody looks. According to McLaren, the aero package has been optimized through application of its F1 and simulation technologies to optimize downforce.

Power comes from a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine rated at up to 630 horses. Packaged in the car's 2,645.5-pound frame, that's quite a bit of punch. Shod in Pirelli racing slicks on black satin-finished lightweight forged racing wheels, it should have plenty of grip, too.

The cockpit is as almost as you'd expect; there's a second seat for a passenger, both with six-point harnesses, plus a race-spec rollcage, the same steering wheel as found in the 12C GT3, and carbon fiber details and accessories throughout. Oddly, there's an integrated air conditioning system, as it's required equipment in "a growing number of race series," per McLaren.

The car will make its debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this weekend.

Lincoln Continental

Lincoln Continental was a model name for a series of automobiles produced by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company from 1939 to 1948 and again from 1956 to 2002. Despite often sharing underpinnings with less-expensive Fords in more recent years, the Lincoln Continental had usually been a distinctively platformed and styled, highly equipped luxury car in the course of its long history.

The flagship Lincoln model during most of its run, the Continental name conveyed special cachet in the product line. During the 1980s, the Continental was downsized from a full-size to a mid-size Ford Taurus platform; this introduced the Continental to a wider range of competition from Europe and Japan. After the Continental was discontinued in 2002, it was largely replaced by the Lincoln LS and eventually the Lincoln MKS.

"BUGATTI" - 1936 TYPE 57 SC ATLANTIC COUPE

One of the most bizarre, elusive and expensive of cars is the "Bugatti" - 1936 Type 57 SC Atlantic Coupe. With its low stance, powerful engine, lightweight construction, 123 mph (200 kph) top speed and influential teardrop body, many believe this is the ultimate Bugatti and the first super car ever made.
Momentum behind the style was structured by a design concept of incorporating Electron, an alloy of magnesium and aluminum from IG Farben of Germany, in the design. Though it is strong, and up to one third the weight of aluminum, it is also highly flammable thus welding was not possible. This meant that each panel had to be riveted into place which posed a particular problem for traditional design. Therefore, Jean incorporated the rivet's aesthetic into the wings of the car and created a telling combination of function and form.

As the first car to bear fins, the silver Electron Aerolithe Prototype debuted as a possible sport model of the "Bugatti" - 1936 Type 57 SC Atlantic Coupe at the 1935 Paris Motor Show. As much of a sensation as the car must have been, it only drew three orders. By the time production commenced in 1936, standard aluminum was chosen over the flammable electron and the specially lowered "Bugatti" - 1936 Type 57 SC Atlantic Coupe chassis, with its smaller, V-shaped radiator was used.

1966 Batmobile

"The 1966 Batmobile by George Barris is the most recognized and popular piece of entertainment history, worldwide, that has become an icon. This is the first time that the original Batmobile has been up for sale. Included with the Batmobile will be historical memorabilia and documentation from George’s personal archive," reads the description of the car from Barrett-Jackson.
In the past, we've seen several other Batmobile replicas used in the 1966 Batman television series and the homonymous movie starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin going under the hummer – for example, the No6 Batmobile fetched US$233,000 at a UK auction in 2007.

The original 1966 Batmobile, which has been in the hands of George Barris since its inception, however, will command a whole lot more money and we wouldn't be surprised at all if it brings in a few million dollars during the Scottsdale Collector Car Auction that runs from January 13 to 20, 2013.

Bentley Continental GT3

Bentley Continental GT3 Racer Makes its U.S. Debut at the LA Auto Show

Despite being renowned primarily for its luxury cars, Bentley has a rich history in endurance racing that dates back to 1928. It took 73 years for it to return to the tracks but when it did, it once again achieved victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Speed 8 in 2003.
That win also marked the end of the British brand’s racing program. A decade later, Bentley decided to engage in motorsports once again, starting from the end of 2013. It will do so with the Continental GT3, which was launched in concept form in Paris and made its U.S. debut at the LA Auto Show.

Based on the Continental GT Speed, the fastest road car Bentley has ever made, the GT3 sports a full-on aerodynamic package and, although the company is still keeping mum on its powerplant, it is rear-wheel drive, as dictated by the class regulations, and not all-wheel drive like the regular production car.

“For some time now our customers have been telling us that it is time to return to motorsport”, said Bentley member of the Board for Engineering Rold Frech. “Our U.S. customers are no exception and I am delighted to be showing the Continental GT3 concept race car in LA”.

Another Bentley making its U.S. debut in LA was the 2013 Continental GT Speed. Boasting 616HP and 590 lb-ft (800) Nm of torque from its turbocharged W12 engine, all-wheel drive and an 8-speed auto, it sprints from a standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph).
Also on display was the Mulsanne saloon in MDS trim, sporting 21-inch alloys, Bentley Flying “B” wing vents and “diamond quilted” leather along with a sports-tuned suspension and steering.

Kevin Rose, member of the Board for sales, marketing and aftersales, commented: “We are pleased to announce today that last week we exceeded the total sales figure from 2011. The U.S. market is playing a crucial role in our success. At the end of Q3, we had seen a 25 percent increase in global sales with 5,969 cars delivered to customers. Of these, 1,750 of them were sold here in the U.S. That makes the Americas our largest market, with a 29 percent increase in sales year on year.”

Mercedes Silver Arrow Concept

For the 2011 Los Angeles Design Challenge, which was seeking to find the most spectacular new film car for Hollywood, the designers from the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Sindelfingen (Germany) and Carlsbad (USA), have joined the ranks of the screen-writers.
The designers at the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studio in Carlsbad, California have created a Hollywood-style homage for Mercedes-Benz to 125 years of innovation in automotive technology and design. The leading roles are played by two high-tech characters which have been instrumental in reconciling safety and stylish design in automobiles: the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow cult racing car and crash test dummies.

The film "Silver Lightning" is set in the near future, in an age of artificial intelligence. Two crash test dummies by the names of Hans05 and Franz02 take on evil ruler Dr. Crash-Barrier to save their beloved Mercedes Silver Arrow. They engage in an action-packed, nerve-jangling duel with the ruthless battering ram before finally outfoxing him.

The Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow Concept is a low-lying sculpture on wheels. A feat of technical innovation is the diagonal, hubless roller which allows steering in all directions. The futuristic Silver Arrow's proportions are reminiscent of the legendary sports car from the late 1930s and the Uhlenhaut SLR from the 1950s.
