Have you ever heard of living stones? Typically, scientists consider life as one of the forms of protein and living creatures change their size, move around and multiply. All this sounds uncharacteristic of stones, doesn’t it?
However, such living stones can be seen in Central and Southern Romania. They are called Trovants and they can grow in size, move around from one place to another and even to multiply, just like other living creatures.
When you look at trovants, they resemble all other stones you have seen but after rain they start growing. A small trovant can quickly grow big and its weigh can reach several tons.
Scientists explain that trovants are made of sandstone and have age rings similar to those of trees. Their growth is explained with the high levels of mineral salts that they contain. When the stone is wet these salts expand and make it change its size. Other extraordinary characteristics of trovants are their movement from one place to another as well as their multiplication through budding.
